Professor Kim Sungpyo of the Department of Environmental System Engineering at Korea University Sejong Campus has been appointed as a deliberation committee member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology.

The Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology is a presidential advisory body that deliberates and provides guidance on the direction of national science and technology policy. It plays a crucial role in establishing national research and development (R&D) strategies and science and technology innovation policies. This appointment is regarded as recognition of Professor Kim’s research achievements and policy contributions in the fields of environmental engineering and public health.

Since joining the Department of Environmental System Engineering at Korea University Sejong Campus in 2009, Professor Kim has actively conducted interdisciplinary environmental research. In particular, he has pioneered the field of infectious disease surveillance based on wastewater surveillance, leading research on public health response.

He also led the establishment of the national wastewater-based infectious disease surveillance system (KOWAS) and contributed to building a proactive infectious disease management framework for public health crises, including establishing Korea’s first wastewater monitoring technology for COVID-19.

Currently, he serves as the 21st President of the Korean Society of Water Environment, playing a key role in advising national water environment policy and advancing related academic fields. In addition, he founded KAD Co., Ltd., a company specializing in infectious disease management, in 2022, and is promoting the practical application of infectious disease prevention and response technologies in cooperation with major domestic and international public institutions such as the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and Sejong Chungnam National University Hospital.
